72% of Australians will Shop Online for Christmas

According to a recent study called “How We Shop” commissioned by Appliances Online and conducted by Galaxy Research, about 72% of Australians will shop online for at least some of their Christmas presents in 2011.

Galaxy Research Study Shows 72% of Australians Will Shop Online for Christmas Presents in 2011

The study also indicated that about 20% of Australians will do the majority of their Christmas shopping online this year. More than 50% of the survey respondents indicated that they would do some online shopping and only 16% said they would not do any shopping online this year.

The Appliances Online CEO commented on the survey results, noting that the online shopping market in Australia has become a lot more competitive over the last year. This is good news for consumers in the country who will benefit from many great deals available just in time for the holiday shopping season.

A new survey from PayPal Australia has also found that many Australians are using time at the office to shop online. Almost 80% of those surveyed admitted that they have spent money on an online shopping site while at work, and almost two thirds of the respondents indicated that they planned to search for holiday gifts during office hours.

The survey also reveals that a majority of Australians prefer to shop for themselves during office hours. Christmas 2011 is projected to see the highest level of online shopping ever in the country, and PayPal is seeing the highest level of online shopping activity taking place on weekdays and during office hours.

Many of the people who are shopping from their office computers are doing so on a regular basis. However, there are some purchases which a majority of Australians will not buy from their office, including personal items like lingerie.

The e commerce industry in Australia is estimated to be worth more than $30 billion by the end of 2011, as more Australians than ever choose to shop online. As more retailers in Australia launch online stores, the trend is likely to continue. PayPal works with more than 40,000 online retailers across the country, including a large number of major retailers who have just opened online stores in the last year.

Many smaller retailers are also succeeding online by offering unique, niche products on their boutique style websites. The increasing number of online shopping venues is good news for consumers, but they must also be careful to protect the security of their personal information as they shop online.

As millions of consumers in Australia shop online to fill their stockings this holiday season, it is important for them to be selective about how they share sensitive personal data, also known as a digital footprint.

It’s estimated that over 4 million Australian shoppers now use PayPal for their online transactions. Using services like PayPal allows shoppers to make purchases online without sharing any personal financial details which helps them to minimize their digital footprint.

It also benefits many small businesses that are able to reach a larger audience of customers by selling their products online. It is recommended that online shoppers take some basic security precautions to protect their data online this Christmas, including using different passwords for each online account and sharing as little personal data as possible.
