You may have heard that there’s a new range of LCD TV and Plasma TVs on the market – Smart TVs. These new TVs are packed full of apps promising to deliver much more than just let you watch your favorite TV shows. But what if you just bought a new LCD that doesn’t have the new feature.
It seems that every time we buy into an expensive entertainment system like a new LCD TV, out comes a newer version that’s even better than the one you just bought! If this has happened to you and these new “smarter” LCD TVs leave you feeling like your new LCD TV is well.. stupid, fear not because LG have taken the initiative to create a device that will turn your normal TV into one of these new smart TVs.
What’s a smart TV? Well Smart TVs have access to the network so you can browse the Internet, do your banking, even log into Facebook from the comfort of your lounge room. You can also access to a big range of applications that will run on the TV including games, lifestyle apps, and much more. Think of it as your mobile phone and it’s apps, but much bigger ;)
Many of the bigger brands of TV manufacturers are now building the technology into their new LCD TV models, but if you already have a huge TV what can you do? LG have made a smart move I think, because they are the only manufacturer at this time that have created a set top box like device to turn your existing TV into a Smart TV.
The device, called the LG ST600 Smart TV Upgrade Box has a range of about 200 applications in categories including games, education, entertainment, lifestyle, news, and info. You can also browse the Internet and watch TV at the same time, and even watch Youtube on the big screen. There’s an Ethernet connection for the Internet and Wi-Fi for a wireless home, one USB connection, and the HDMI for TV.
These new devices are a great idea. Personally I think these devices will be more popular than set top boxes in the near future, simply because there’s so much more to offer than just TV shows. Dick Smith are currently selling the LG ST600 Smart TV device for $178.00, which is a cheap price to pay for computer like functionality.
