Introducing the All New Apple Mac mini
Yesterday Apple released an all new, redesigned Mac mini, featuring a new HDMI port, SD memory card slot in a new aluminium enclosure. Add energy efficiency and twice the graphics performance, and you're going to love the new Mac mini.
At Online Shopping Australia, we work with Mac minis, and we're very impressed with the Apple desktops. I've worked on PC computers for at least 20 years and we made the switch to Apple Mac computers a year ago. Since then we've never had the issues we used to have, software almost never crashes, devices just plug in and work and it's fast enough to handle all of the Apple eye candy. Most importantly, the Apple Mac mini is quite, really quite.
If you're a windows user, that last paragraph will sound like a salesman, however if you go speak to an Apple Mac user, they will agree that these computers just work ;)
The new Mac mini features an aluminium enclosure just 19.7cm square and 3.6cm thick, which includes an integrated power supply, to eliminate the need for the external power adapter. A removable panel under the Mac mini provides access for memory expansion, which is good if you want to upgrade the mini yourself.
The new HDMI output connects Mac mini to a high definition TV, and with twice the graphics performance, I can now see the Mac mini as a brilliant entertainment unit. The SD card slot enables the transfer of photos and videos from a digital camera, however the slot is at the back and like the powerup button, it's hard to get to at. From a computer user point of view, the SD memory card works the same way as a DVD slot, I think it should be at the front of the Mac mini.
The Mac mini is the world's most energy efficient desktop and with a starting price of just $999 it's the most affordable way to enjoy and enter the Apple World. It comes packed with the Mac OS X Snow Leopard, and "iLife", Apple's innovative suite of applications for managing photos, making movies and creating and learning to play music.
The Mac mini starts with the following configuration, and is shipping now. Build-to-order options are available at the Apple Store when you buy the new Mac mini online.
The New Mac mini Includes:
- 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 3MB of shared L2 cache
- 2GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM, expandable up to 8GB
- A slot-load 8X SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW) optical drive
- 320GB Serial ATA hard drive running at 5400 rpm
- NVIDIA GeForce 320M integrated graphics
- AirPort Extreme 802.11n wireless networking and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR
- Gigabit Ethernet
- Four USB 2.0 ports
- SD card slot
- One FireWire 800 port
- One HDMI port and one Mini DisplayPort
- HDMI to DVI video adapter
- Combined optical digital audio input/audio line in (minijack) and combined optical digital audio output/headphone out (minijack).
The previous Mac mini is indeed a little work horse for me, and it's never had a day when it wouldn't work well. If you're considering the new Mac mini, I recommend you use the Build-to-order option and upgrade it with a 2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, 4GB of memory, a 500GB hard drive, and lastly a AppleCare Protection Plan, all this bumps up the price a bit, but makes it a Mac mini monster for extra processing power ;)
