Google To Sell eBooks Online

It looks like Google will be joining Amazon, Apple, and Barnes & Noble, by launching their own digital eBook store later this year.

CRN Australia is reporting that Google is preparing to start selling digital books online, with the launch of its Editions e-book service. "The Wall Street Journal quoted Google manager for strategic development Chris Palma in reporting that the company would be setting the Editions service live as soon as late June."

Selling eBooks online makes a lot of sense for Google, especially as they've put so much time and effort into Google Books, indexing the content from millions of books worldwide.

According to CRN Australia, Google has promised that their eBooks will run on any device with a browser, and just like Apple's iBookstore, publishers will be able to set their own prices.

An article published on smh.com.au certainly indicates that Australian publishers are going to back the new Google eBook store. And with more than 30,000 publishers worldwide already partnered with Google Books, they're going to be a force to be reckoned with.

I'm very interested to see how all these digital book stores are going to compete when the iPad launches in Australia later this month. I certainly hope it means more books with lower prices for everyone.
