10 Billion Songs Downloaded From The iTunes Store

Apple love their milestones, and today marks another huge milestone for Apple, as the 10 billionth song has just been downloaded in iTunes.

I was watching the 10 billion song download counter earlier, and it was clocking up 1,000 songs every 8 seconds, that's nearly 10.8 million songs a day!

My personal contribution to this incredible 10 billion song milestone, is a total of 1,343 songs, and that's just in the last 11 months, since I've started buying my music in the iTunes Store.

I created my iTunes Store account in September 2005, but it wasn't until Apple announced high-quality DRM-free music in March 2009, that I started to buy and download albums through the iTunes Store. Instant access to millions of high quality 256-Kpbs songs with no restrictions, gave me all the reasons I needed to stop buying CDs.

I purchased my first digital album (Coldplay Viva la Vida) through the iTunes Store on March 27, 2009, since then I've downloaded 70 complete albums (14GB of digital music). A lot of people just buy individual songs in iTunes, but I prefer to buy complete albums, call me old-fashioned, but I like to listen to all the songs as a complete body of work, just as the artist intended.

It wasn't long before I'd ripped all my old CDs into iTunes, and my entire music collection was digital.

After using iTunes for a month, I realised I was totally bitten by the Apple bug and splurged some hard earned cash on an Apple TV -- I'd been looking for a digital media hub to connect to my HD TV for some time, and the Apple TV seemed to fit the bill perfectly. A week later, I'd ditched my clunky old Windows Mobile smartphone, and was drooling over the gloss and finger tapping goodness of the iPhone!

Instead of playing CDs, I was now using Apple Remote software on my iPhone, to wirelessly connect to my digital media collection on the Apple TV, which was synced with iTunes on my PC! iTunes was the ultimate desktop media application -- it allowed me to purchase, update, manage and play all my digital media in one place.

That was it, I was well and truly hooked, and it didn't take me long to persuade my business partner to jump on the Apple bandwagon too. In June 2009, after nearly 20 years of using Windows PCs, we both moved over to Mac, with the purchase of 2 new Mac mini's and 1TB Time Capsules. We'd both been frustrated and disappointed with PCs and Windows for so many years, that moving over to Mac was like a breath of fresh air -- everything just seemed so intuitive, efficient and user friendly.

Discovering iTunes turned out to be a major catalyst for me, in fact it totally renewed my passion for computing and music, and gave me a new hobby to boot! I'm a complete digital media junkie now, regularly downloading music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and iPhone apps.

Congratulations Apple, and here's looking forward to the next major milestone, 20 billion songs downloaded from iTunes!
