It wasn't so long ago that we all used 3.5" Floppy Disks to backup and move our valuable data. Floppy disks were cheap and disposable but completely unreliable (even the ones that stated on the packet that they were more reliable were still unreliable!) Over the years I've thrown hundreds of floppy disks in the bin because they were corrupt and wouldn't write or read properly. At one point I got so paranoid about losing data I'd keep 3 copies on 3 disks in 3 different locations; with a miniscule 1.44MB of storage space that meant a lot of disks!

Next was the promise of 650MB of data storage with the advent of the writeable & re-writeable CD. Definitely more reliable (although initially prone to infuriating buffer overrun errors) but my bin still ended up full with aborted write attempts and more corrupt discs. Over time the quality, speed and reliability of the CD's and CD Drives has certainly improved and now we also have writeable DVD's with a whopping 4.7GB of storage space. What is annoying here though is the multiple formats and incompatibility between discs and drives. Why can't everyone just agree on one format!
